The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

• You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
• Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
