Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
